Instructions:
Some words that come to mind when I envision the logo:
Gentle
Comforting
Nurturing
Healing
Supportive

The logo may have a more spiritual feel to it than medical. If there's a way for the logo to abstractly convey a passage, as occurs with death (without being overly obvious, such as a tunnel with a light at the end) that might be interesting...if it comes about organically during your design of it.

On the flip side of that, I don't think I want the logo to be overly cute or "flowery". It should still convey a professional feel.

I'd like to avoid a logo that looks cold or depressing in nature.

Also, our company is located in a California beach town, so the ocean etc. is a part of our local culture (but it doesn't by any means need to be included in the logo...just offering a feel of the client base).

These are all just my thoughts, not requirements by any means. I defer to your design judgment. :)
Please contact me if I can answer any questions or clarify further.
