Dallas Mineral Collecting Symposium
PROJECT This project is to create a new logo for an annual symposium/learning event held in Dallas every August. The event is called, "The Dallas Mineral Collecting Symposium" and it is a special event designed to educate and excite people who are interested in mineral collecting as a Collectible Hobby. The talks given at the Symposium are a carefully blended mix of adventure stories (this is true Indiana Jones stuff) and scientific information. This is hosted by one of the biggest mineral dealers in the world and the entire event has evolved to become a full weekend of special dinners, events and parties that surround the Symposium itself. THE INDUSTRY I'll try to be as brief yet through as possible as I describe this hobby. We are all familiar with cut stones in jewelry like diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies. All these cuts stones were, at one time, beautiful mineral crystals (think Superman Fortress of Solitude) created by nature. It is these natural mineral crystals - along with many, many other types of minerals - that has created this Collectible Hobby field with prices ranging from a few dollars to several million dollars for a single specimen. The Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. has a specimen of a mineral called Tourmaline on display near the Hope Diamond. It is speculated that this Tourmaline specimen, named the Candelabra, is worth in excess of $10 Million dollars. So, as you can see, this can be a very serious and important hobby for many.
