We are developing a citizen science project that incorporates several areas of technology development. We are using computer learning to automate the identification of native Australian orchid species, creating a mobile phone app for citizen scientists to take photographs of orchids in the wild and collect habitat data, a platform and image repository for submitted photographs to be stored, and a web portal for citizen science, education and gamification. Essentially our project aims to develop innovative digital tools to help improve our knowledge of native Australian orchids, and provide guidance for land managers to conserve and better manage remnant vegetation. Our project is Australia wide.

THANKS! ********* We want a simple, yet versatile logo that has instant recognition attributable to the WOW project. The logo should work both in colour, and in black and white (/greyscale) - but should be coloured. The logo should feature both the text ‘Wild Orchid Watch’ and feature the acronym WOW (i.e. the capitals WOW could be in different colour/typeface etc.). The logo should feature 1) an orchid, and if possible/ideally 2) the user interaction (person/mobile phone etc.). The orchid – must look like an orchid, and not just another flower. It does not have to be taxonomically correct, but must be easily distinguished as an orchid, and not a lily, daisy, etc. The orchid must be freestanding (not an epiphytic species attached to a rock/tree stump etc). Some of our partner logos are black and white. One project partner, TERN, is multi-coloured. The WOW logo must look suitable sitting alongside the TERN logo. The TERN logo can be seen here www.tern.org.au. Specifications of the TERN logo are detailed below. Note: in the mock-up examples provided, we deemed the purple not appropriate, as it would never look good alongside the TERN logo. The outline shape of the orchid depicted in the attached mock-up is suitable. TERN CMYK (for use in offset printing) Olive: 65, 45, 100, 20 Blue: 75, 50, 15, 20 Orange: 0, 50, 100, 25 Red: 0, 75, 100, 25 Pale Green: 40, 20, 50, 0 TERN RGB (for use in digital outputs) Olive: 93, 107, 48 Blue: 65, 100, 142 Orange: 194, 116, 21 Red: 189, 78, 23 Pale Green: 161, 178, 142 NB: These RGB values are consistent with Photoshop. Depending on which program is used to convert CMYK to RGB colours these values may change. We anticipate the WOW logo will be used: on the WOW app we are developing, on our website (to be developed), our social media pages (to be developed), on presentations (i.e. powerpoint), on scientific reports, and on printed brochures and pamphlets.

    Brief for finalists Please be creative (because we aren’t!). To date the logo we have played around with focussed on merely ‘an orchid’ looking flower with the text WILD ORCHID WATCH. We’ve seen your submitted logos, and have had a look at logos you have entered in previous competitions, so we know you have the talent. Please help us think outside the square. The winning logo may in fact be something completely different to what we originally had in mind. We really want to highlight the fact that WOW is an innovative, high tech approach to monitoring native orchid populations. We want to attract citizen scientists – kids, community organisations and orchid enthusiasts, to engage with us, and have a lot of fun whilst contributing to our research. The colour palette used will still need to look good sitting alongside the TERN logo (details below). The logo must be eye catching, yet simple! It does not necessarily have to include an orchid – but if it does, we like artistic line art rather than detail (because our enthusiasts will focus too much on technicalities of correct taxonomy – we want to avoid this as it is hard to easily capture in a basic eye catching logo). Please come up with a winning logo for us!
